Located at the end of State Highway 504 (52 miles east of Castle Rock), in the heart of the blast zone. The observatory hosts interpretive displays that tell the biological, geological, and human story of Mount St. Helens. Visitors to Johnston Ridge Observatory can enjoy multiple award-winning films, listen to ranger talks, observe the landscape, purchase souvenirs, set off on a hike, or get a light lunch from the food cart.

Johnston Ridge Observatory is the premier visitor center for experiencing the dramatic story of Mount St. Helens and its remarkable recovery from the historic 1980 eruption. Located at the end of State Route 504, approximately 52 miles east of Castle Rock, WA, the observatory offers breathtaking panoramic views of the volcano’s crater, lava dome, and surrounding blast zone. 

Inside, interpretive exhibits, ranger‑led programs, and theater presentations bring the geological, biological, and human history of the eruption to life. Visitors can learn how the landscape was transformed, the science behind volcanic monitoring, and the ongoing natural processes that continue to shape the region. A paved interpretive trail extends from the observatory, providing close‑up views of volcanic features and the stark yet recovering terrain.
